We all have our beauty routines, some of them are more complex and elaborate than others but at the end we all try to look our best. Unfortunately, the beauty industry is one of the world’s biggest sources of waste. But don’t worry, there are very simple tips you can follow to make a conscious effort to become a more eco-friendly consumer.
You don’t have to change your entire routine, just check out these tips and choose what works best for you.
Support eco-friendly and sustainable brands.
There are many brands, new and not so new, that have worried about our planet and make an effort to bring to the table products that are made out of sustainable ingredients, free of animal cruelty and have packages that can be recycled. You can find if your usual go to brand has these things by doing a quick online search or you can check our article about eco-friendly Mexican beauty brands right here.
Recycle your beauty containers.
Resist the temptation and don’t just throw away your empty containers once you’re done with them. If it is true that some of them can’t be just put into the recycling bins. There are programs like TerraCycle that allow you to mail the containers so they can be repurposed. Another option is to look for brands like Lush that allows you to bring back the empty containers to them and you can even get discounts for that.
Make your dental routine plastic-free.
Dental hygiene products are one of the hardest plastics to recycle and most of their containers are still in the landfills. Regular toothpaste can be replaced with toothpaste tablets that usually come in recyclable or reusable containers. You can also switch your toothbrush from plastic to bamboo and your single use flossers for refillable tooth picks or water picks.
Go for reusable options.
Using single use cotton pads every time makes a considerable increase in your daily waste and your pocket. You can use reusable ones that can last a very long time and you’re not only reducing those trips to the store but you’re also helping the environment.
Look for products that are biodegradable.
Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, but if you look for options that contain materials that can biodegrade in a short time you will make a difference. Look for hair brushes, toothbrushes and product containers that can naturally break down in a landfill.
