Mexico City is not exactly famous for being a clean city. However, that is something we can change. That’s why I bring you 7 super easy tips that every resident of Mexico City can apply to help our beautiful city’s fight against pollution.
1. Don’t waste it
It’s no secret that the water system in CDMX is often affected, that is why saving water is crucial for the city’s residents.
An easy way to do this is by placing buckets in the shower while you are waiting for the water to heat up, you can then use that water to clean, flush the toilet or water your plants. You can also try to take quicker showers or close the faucet while you’re brushing your teeth or shaving.
A bad habit of CDMX residents is that we are addicted to technology, that implies that we have to charge different devices in our homes, and, although it may not seem like it, leaving your phone charger connected wastes energy and pollutes. So make sure to unplug all the devices that you are not using and leave only the essentials connected. Those little details make a difference.
3. Reduce plastics
There are many easy ways to reduce our plastic consumption; carry your reusable cloth bags when grocery shopping, use refillable water bottles, use metal or bamboo straws, there are many choices.
All Mexico City residents complain about the traffic. It seems that there are more cars than residents, and that’s actually not far from the truth.
You can help the city’s lungs by not using your car at least once a week. Public transportation is an option. Although if the subway is not for you, try to carpool with one of your friends who works with or near you. Another choice is to use your bicycle for short trips.
5. Go green
In big cities, green areas are quite scarce, so having plants in our home, in addition to making it look prettier, is of great help to reduce pollution within our dwellings.
Now imagine what would happen if every person had a small jungle inside their home, the city would breathe differently.
6. Separate and recycle
Recycling is the best known way to help the environment and, fortunately, CDMX has many sites where you can recycle paper, plastic, metal and glass. So, go on, separate your trash and take it to your local recycling center.
7. Measure your progress with the PerSus app
Sometimes it’s difficult to know if we are doing things right regarding helping the planet but don’t worry, that’s what the PerSus is for. By installing the app, you can record and measure your actions to fight pollution within your city, sharing with your friends or adopting new sustainable challenges.
